Radiator Repair & Replacement

The radiator is vital in keeping the car engine temperature within reasonable levels. If the temperature gauge shows unusually high readings, the radiator and the car cooling system may need some prompt attention.

The radiator prevents the engine from overheating and, in extreme cases, from bursting into flames. Heat is produced as the engine is running. This heat is dissipated and kept at low levels within the engine through the cooling system. The coolant inside the radiator flows through and eliminates excess heat.

Understanding The Radiator

Two tanks are inside the radiator. These tanks are connected via brass or aluminum tubes. The coolant passes through these tubes as it circulates between the tanks. As the coolant passes through the tubes, the radiator fan blows across the coolant to further help dissipate excess heat.

These tanks are usually made of plastic. One of the common problems involving the radiator is the cracking of the plastic casing. Consequently, the coolant would leak. This can put the engine at risk for overheating. If not addressed promptly, serious long term damage to the engine may develop.

Another potential problem is clogging. This can keep sufficient amounts of coolant from flowing through the system. This can lead to overheating.

These problems can start from small problems. To prevent costly repairs and replacement, regular maintenance is important. Keep the radiator in good shape. Occasionally perform a radiator flush to remove any buildup from the pipes and tubes.

Checking the Radiator

These problems can be easily prevented through regular radiator checkup and maintenance. Cracks seen early on can be addressed to prevent coolant leaks. Serious clogging can be prevented through regular maintenance.

The coolant system may be in need of professional servicing if any of these signs are present:

  • Indicator or warning lights light up
  • Signs of leakage or fluid loss
  • Steam coming out of the motor
  • Temperature gauge readings higher than normal

In case the radiator needs some repairs, some of the expected works that may be done include:

  • Thorough inspection of coolant/antifreeze system
  • Replacement of coolant/antifreeze with new liquid
  • Replacement of components, as needed

Repairing damages as they pop-up is very important in keeping the car in good condition. Seemingly small damages and problems can quickly turn into disasters if not fixed promptly. They can lead to overheating and serious engine damage. The entire radiator may even require total replacement if the damage is already extensive.

Replacing the Radiator

Some of the common signs that suggest that a radiator replacement is due include:

  • Coolant seeps from the engine, especially when the car is stationary
  • Engine regularly overheats

Coolant seeping from the engine may be observed by the presence of a pool of red or yellow fluid under the car.

When these signs are observed, it is time to bring in some professional help. Transmissions Factory offers reliable professional help for any problems involving the radiator. Bring the car immediately before things take a turn for the worst.

Radiator Care

As always, prevention is better and much cheaper than repair and replacement. Each car has a maintenance schedule. Maintenance should include the replacement of coolant. This is usually done during a tune-up. This can be performed when the mileage reaches around 25,000 to 40,000 miles. Professionals can perform more accurate checkups of the radiator and its parts. They have the technical know-how, as well as the tools and equipment for the job.

Having a radiator in good condition ensures that the car will perform reliably all year round. It will also ensure that the car engine is adequately cooled for optimum power and performance. The rest of the engine will also be able to stay in good running condition with a properly functioning radiator.
