You probably do not think a lot about your vehicle’s transfer case. You may not even know that such a thing exists.
Transfer Case and Its Uses
If your vehicle is a four-wheel drive, it will have a transfer case. This apparatus, which is also called a transfer gearbox or a jockey box, allows the transfer of power to the front wheels from the rear wheels.
The transfer case makes it possible for you to choose from several driving modes. It does this by redirecting torque.
The transfer case allows you to shift to four-wheel drive low, four-wheel drive high, two-wheel drive, or neutral. When you opt for the 2-wheel drive mode, the transfer case redirects the engine’s power to the back wheels.
When you want to use the 4-wheel drive mode, the transfer case reroutes power to the axles of both the rear and front wheels. You can use the 4-wheel drive low mode if the traction on the road is bad. Your vehicle will run at a really low speed but at a higher RPM. The RPM helps the tires function more efficiently to make up for the less-than-ideal grip.
The four-wheel drive high mode, on the other hand, is useful if you are driving through snow. The transfer case will drive both the front and back wheels at the same speed.
In nearly all vehicles, a chain drives the transfer case. A chain-driven transfer case usually runs more quietly than one that is gear-driven. The former, however, is usually recommended for off-road driving as the gears help make the transfer case last longer.
Your transfer case requires fluid. To keep your transfer case efficient and fully functional, you have to make sure that you always have adequate and fresh fluid. Have the fluid changed regularly. Make sure that there are no leaks. When you go to have your oil changed, have your transfer case checked also. Should there be problems, have a technician deal with them right away. This will ensure that your vehicle always has a strong and efficient power train.
Common Signs of Transfer Case Problems
- Your vehicle screeches when you drive faster or when you shift gears.
- Your vehicle tends to shimmy or lurch.
- Your vehicle does not accelerate when you step on the gas; it simply continues to spin.
- Your vehicle pops out of gear when you are driving.
- When the climate is cold, you hear strange noises coming from the front of your vehicle.
- You notice signs of seepage on the seals.
- You have a harder time than usual when you try to shift to higher or lower gears.
Transfer Case Maintenance and Repair
If you want your vehicle to perform well, you have to keep your transfer case in good condition. Old fluid should be periodically drained. It should be replaced by new first-rate fluid. You should also check the case for leaks and other signs of damage.
The transfer case goes through a lot of beating. It goes through so much wear-and-tear that it will periodically call for diagnosis and servicing. When your transfer case does not work properly, the entire vehicle may go out of commission. You may not be able to use it at all.
