Transmission Repair and Transmission Services

Vehicles run smoothly with transmission and suspension systems in good condition. Regular check-up and maintenance make sure that all elements of the transmission system are working well. Professional help from experts on transmission systems will surely keep this vehicle system in good shape and reliable running condition, no matter what type of transmission system there is.

How Transmissions Work

A vehicle’s transmission has three main responsibilities. First is to transfer power from the engine of the vehicle to its wheels called torque. Second is to use the power of the engine to move the car forward and backward. Lastly, it enables the vehicle to shift gears. This allows the vehicle to move at various speed levels through various gear ratios.

Automatic Transmissions

Regardless of the make and model, we can repair and replace broken and problematic ATs. However, do expect that most of the time, it will either be a rebuild or a replacement. This type of transmission comes with a torque converter. This converter automatically shifts the planetary gears with the gears for accelerating and decelerating.

Manual Transmissions

This is a more complex system compared to the automatic transmission system. Manual transmission is composed of several interconnected parts including input/output shafts, gears and clutch. The clutch and the gear shifter are engaged manually by the driver to change gears as the RPMS is increased. The speed of the vehicle will accelerate or decelerate depending if the driver shifts the gear into either into a shorter or a taller gear. Manual transmission also has other functions. It maintains adequate amount of power flowing forward and backward between the vehicle’s engine and its wheels.

CVT (Constant Variable Transmission)

This is usually the type of transmission in vehicles like the Audi, BMW, GM and Ford. The early CVT's were used in snowmobiles and other recreational vehicles. CVT's do not have any gears. In its place are 2 sets of plates. These plates are responsible for changing and moving the ratios existing between the engine and the wheels. A belt is placed between the plates, transmitting the torque. No interruptions occur when changing gears. Operation is entirely smooth. This is more convenient and has better fuel economy.

DCT (Dual Clutch Transmissions)

This type of transmission uses far less energy than the other types. The clutch is softer and easier to control. The clutch is managed using a hydraulic system. For this type, it is important to check all the moving parts such as the solenoids, controls, switches and modules. All these should be intact.

Transfer Cases

These are typically found in AWD cars, 4WD cars, and trucks. This type of transmission splits the engine’s torque through the axles in front and in the rear. There are several gears that allow for ability to drive at varying driving conditions. It is like having an additional gear for raising or lowering the operating range of the transmission. Vehicles with this type of transmission typically traverse off-road, uphill conditions. The driver will have to engage the lower range gearing in order to increase the torque.

Caring For Your Transmission

The transmission system is vital to smooth driving. It has to be properly maintained to keep in good running condition. Transmission fluid should be regularly changed, according to schedule. The schedule can be found in the manufacturer’s manual. If this is not available, a recommendation from professionals with expertise in vehicle transmission system will be of great help.

Never ride the clutch, especially if the vehicle has manual transmission. This can put undue strain on the transmission system.

Observe for some indications that the transmission is in need of repair and/or servicing. Transmissions will eventually wear out because of all the hard grinding and shifting. One indication that it’s time for some needed professional help is when there are vibrations while driving. This can indicate that some parts of the transmission need some attention. Bring the vehicle to professionals such as the Advanced Auto Transmission immediately for expert attention.

At Advanced Auto Transmission, “we’ll fix it fast and we’ll fix it right.”
